IN MEMORIAM

COMPTON, Helen Foster (nee Souther) passed away peacefully after a short illness in Duncan, B.C. on February 21, 2010 at the awesome age of 105 years.
Helen was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, October 26, 1904. When she was two, her family moved to Edmonton, Alberta. When Helen was seven, they returned to the East for a few months. Later they again made their home in Edmonton. On finishing high school Helen trained to be a teacher, and eventually her teaching career took her to Edson, Alberta, where some years later she met her future husband, Harry. After he returned from the army in 1946, they moved to the Coast, making their home on Vancouver’s North Shore. After her three children were well-established in school she went back to teaching until she retired in 1970. Three years later Helen and Harry built their home on Henry Road, out of Chemainus. After 21 years of widowhood she moved into town. Helen was active in her church, serving as secretary of the U.C.W. for seven years. She also sang in the church choir for many years. She loved gardening and for most of her life sewed clothing for herself and her family. She was also an avid knitter, supplying socks for many of the family. She is predeceased by her baby son David; her husband Harry; two brothers, Wilfred and Robert Souther; four sisters, Margaret Ross, Irene Neff, Hazel Anderson, and Jean Newcombe; brothers-in-law Robert Ross, Cyril Ross, Ralph Neff, James Anderson, and Edward Newcombe; sisters-in-law Edna Souther and Winifred Souther; niece Janice Anderson; nephews Edward Newcombe Jr., Paul Ross, Steven Ross, and Daniel Neff; and son-in-law Gordon Aune. Helen is survived by two daughters, Louise Wall (Isaac) and Joyce Szoladi (Imre); son Glen Compton; five grandchildren, Rachel Terry (Neil), Joseph Szoladi, Christopher Wall, Rebecca Szoladi, and John Szoladi; three great-grandchildren, Daniel Terry, Jordan Lindberg, and Dominic Szoladi; three brothers-in-law, Denis Compton (Betty), George Compton, and Horace Compton (Diana); and nieces and nephews, Dorothy Wiggs, Alan Souther; Don Souther, Marilyn Souther; Gail Bell, Victor Neff, Dianne Smith; Honorée Newcombe; Devlin Anderson, Ivan Anderson; Cathy Sawden; Edward Compton, Angela Wilson, and Jennifer Guay. Special thanks to Dr. P. Manhas and the caring staff at Cowichan District Hospital and Chemainus Health Care Centre. Donations in Helen’s memory can be made to CNIB or your favourite charity, your own church, or Chemainus United Church.
A Memorial Service was held Thursday, February 25, 2010, at Chemainus United Church, 9814 Willow Street, Chemainus, B.C., at 2 pm.

CRAIG, Gladyce It is with sadness that we report that Glad Craig passed away on January 29, 2010 at the Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan, BC. Glad was born on November 17, 1925 in Saskatchewan. She is survived by her two sons, Robert Williams (Danita) of Kelowna BC and Mark Williams (Irene) of Smithers BC and grandchildren Katrina, David, Ariana, Halina and Michael Williams. The family would like to extend their thanks to the caring staff at Cairnsmore Place and to Dr. Manhas. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

FITZPATRICK, Edith Marion (nee Deeble) November 1, 1923 – February 11, 2010 Marion passed away peacefully at UBC Hospital, Vancouver, BC. Predeceased by her former husband, Robert A. Fitzpatrick, and sister Phyllis (Earl) Sarsiat, she is survived by her daughter Sheila Fitzpatrick; sons Mark (Claire) Fitzpatrick and Brian Fitzpatrick; grandchildren Erika, Anna and Ian; sisters Mary (Doug) Cleough, Francis (John) Stewart, Anne (Howard) Valleau; and brother Harry (Dulcie) Deeble. Marion was born in Kinistino, Saskatchewan, and grew up in Ladysmith and Chemainus, BC. She served with the Royal Canadian Air Force in England during World War II, then spent several happy years obtaining her B. A. degree at the University of British Columbia. Marion was a great walker and nature lover. She loved poetry and was a patron of the arts. She was passionate about ballet, theatre and travel. Marion held a variety of jobs including an accounting position in the engineering firm A.H. Lundberg during the 1980’s. A memorial gathering will be held at the Unitarian Church (949 W. 49th Ave.) Fireside Room on Friday, February 19, 2010, from 1:30 to 4 PM. The family would like to thank the doctors and care staff at Dogwood Lodge, Vancouver Hospital and UBC Hospital for the care, support and comfort they gave during Marion’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

COOKING

GARNET AND SHIRLEY wrote a cookbook in 1979 with most of their favourite recipes. For example: fresh strawberry pie; banana cream with whole bananas; mile high lemon meringue, Boston crème, etc. Some of the soups include his famous clam chowder, mulligatawny and many of his cream soups. His very delicious stir fry sauce is also included. Unfortunately we did not include our quiche or meat pies, but we will be very happy to pass them on. Garnet and Shirley still make meat pies and bread. For more information, phone 250748-4778. Our book is for sale at Travel Too Destinations in Chemainus. 250-246-2828.
